October Mist

A dense autumn mist settles between towering evergreens, softening the forest until the trail ahead seems to disappear into another world.

October Mist was photographed late in the morning on October 20, 2016, during a hike through the woods near Eugene, Oregon, around the trails of Spencer Butte. The air was brisk and fresh, fallen autumn leaves covered the forest floor, and brilliant greens remained beneath the canopy.

But it was the fog that transformed the morning.

Thick mist drifted between the trees, quieting the landscape and giving the forest an almost otherworldly presence. It became one of those moments where the surroundings seem to ask you to slow down, look deeper, and simply be there.

The experience stayed with me long after the hike ended and eventually helped inspire a story I wrote titled The Wolf.
