Flowing Desert

A canyon holds its shape a secret until the very last turn.

Teall Hale photographed this scene in June 2025, during a trip across Idaho with a friend that also took them past the Idaho Potato Museum, rolling hills, and mountains along the way. The falls are Shoshone Falls, near Twin Falls, sometimes called the Niagara of the West for a drop that outsizes its more famous namesake, set inside a canyon reached by otherwise unassuming farm roads. Teall gave the photograph to Adam as a gift, and for a long while it was how Adam knew the place: through her eye, not his own footsteps.

Adam finally visited in July 2026, on a father-and-son trip across Idaho. The approach felt like discovering something hidden: town and farmland opening onto a park entrance, canyon walls, and a winding road, with the full scale of the falls invisible until the last possible moment. Seeing it in person only deepened what the photograph had already given him.

A quiet reminder that some of the best views arrive as someone else's gift, long before you ever reach them yourself.
